Reference-Book English Literature is divided into literary ages. Every age has its own specific characteristics which influence its literature. We usually start the history of English Literature from Greece or Greek Era Mcqs. Greek Era is divided into Pre-Classical and Classical periods. It is taken as the base of English Literature. According to an estimate, about 150,000 words of English have been derived from Greek words. After Greek Era, we talk about Old English Period. It is also known as Anglo-Saxon Period of English Literature. Then Anglo-Norman Period starts. It is also known as Medievalism or Middle Age. Age of Chaucer is included in it. After this, Renaissance English Period starts. It includes Elizabethan Age. Then, Neoclassical Period starts. It includes Jacobean Era, Caroline Era, Interregnum Era, Age of Milton (Puritan Age), Age of Dryden (Restoration Age), Augustan Age, Age of Alexander Pope and Age of Johnson. Then Romantic period of English Literature prevails. After this, Victorian Age starts. It lasts up to the end of 19th century. Modern Age of English Literature starts with the start of 20th century. It includes the Edwardian Period and the Georgian Period. It lasts up to the end of World War I. Then the Post-Modern Era starts. It is also known as the Contemporary Age.
